What time is it in the world?
There are a total of 24 time zones on Earth, ranging from UTC-0 to UTC+12 and UTC-11.
This graphic with the world’s time zones explains exactly what this means.
The time zones on this map refer to winter time without any further time difference!
Why are there different time zones on earth?
Imagine the earth is like a large sphere and the sun always shines on one part of it. When it is light on one side of the earth, it is dark on the other. This is called day and night.
Because the earth rotates, every place on earth has day and night at different times. The time when the sun is highest in the sky is midday. But what is midday for you may be midnight for someone on the other side of the world!
We have time zones so that everyone can wake up, work and sleep at roughly the same time. The world has been divided into different time zones so that everyone can carry out their daily activities at roughly the same time.
There are a total of 24 time zones in the world. Each time zone has a specific time that is considered standard time. In some countries, the time is also put forward or back by one hour, depending on whether it is summer or winter. This is called summer time or winter time.
So, when you travel to Australia, you have to change your watch because there is a different time zone. That’s because the sun shines at different times in different places on earth!
Online time – What does UTC mean?
And what time (UTC + ?) applies on the different continents?
UTC stands for “Coordinated Universal Time“. UTC is a globally recognized time reference that is used as the basis for determining local times in different time zones. Note: UTC time is universally valid, regardless of summer time or winter time. If summer time applies in a country, one hour is added to the UTC time zone!
UTC time is used as a reference point in all time zones around the world to calculate the time differences between different locations. It is a standardized time that is not influenced by summer time or winter time.
Here are examples of UTC time on different continents, each with a city and the time difference that applies there:
- North America: New York City, USA (UTC-5 hours)
- South America: Buenos Aires, Argentina (UTC-3 hours)
- Europe: London, Great Britain (UTC±0 hours)
- Africa: Lagos, Nigeria (UTC+1 hour)
- Asia: Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UTC+4 hours)
- Australia: Sydney, Australia (UTC+11 hours)
Please note that the actual time differences may vary depending on summer or winter time. However, these examples provide a general overview of UTC time on the various continents.
On this clock you can see the current UTC online time. This time is valid in the time zone UTC + 0, which is the time in London during winter time.
Note that in Central Europe, in cities such as Paris, Madrid or Berlin, UTC+1 applies.
And this despite the fact that Paris is on the same longitude as London! But with summer time, UTC + 2 applies here!
Online time UTC + 1
What time is it in Berlin?
Berlin – online clock UTC + 1 | Paris, Madrid,Rome: UTC + 1
Berlin is a fantastic city with lots of exciting things to discover! Berlin is in the UTC + 1 time zone, but beware: during summer time, UTC + 2 applies as the clock is set forward by one hour. Check it out exactly on our online clock under this section!
In Berlin there is the famous Brandenburg Gate, which looks like a large gate and is often visited by people. The TV tower is like a long tower with a round ball on top from where you can see the whole city. The Berlin Zoo is also very exciting because you can see many animals from all over the world.
People in Berlin mainly speak German, which is their official language. But you might also meet people who speak English, Turkish or other languages!
Berlin is located at approximately 52 degrees north latitude and 13 degrees east longitude. This means that it is located in the middle of Germany. If you look on a world map, you will find Berlin there!
According to Wikipedia, the current population of Berlin is around 3.5 million people. That’s a lot of people living together in this exciting city! Berlin is one of only 4 million cities in Germany. Do you know them all?
Winter time! UTC + 1
Many European capitals are in the UTC+1 time zone.
Here are just a few of them:
- Berlin, Germany
- Paris – France
- Rome – Italy
- Madrid – Spain
- Amsterdam – Netherlands
- Brussels – Belgium
- Vienna – Austria
- Berne – Switzerland
- Stockholm – Sweden
These cities are all in the same time zone and therefore have the same standard time of UTC+1.
Isn’t it amazing that there is a time difference of one hour between London and Paris, even though the cities are on the same longitude?
Summer time! UTC + 2
However, these capital cities are all in the UTC +2 time zone during summer time:
- Berlin, Germany
- Paris – France
- Rome – Italy
- Madrid – Spain
- Amsterdam – Netherlands
- Brussels – Belgium
- Vienna – Austria
- Berne – Switzerland
- Stockholm – Sweden
However, it is important to note that during summer time the clock is set forward by one hour and the time zone in these cities is then UTC+2.
Online time UTC-7 / UTC-8
What time is it in San Francisco?
San Francisco – online clock UTC – 8 | Los Angeles UTC – 8

What is atomic clock time and an atomic clock?
What is an atomic clock ? It is a high-precision clock that measures time based on the properties of atoms. The atomic time measured by an atomic clock is considered to be the most accurate and stable time measurement currently available.
The atomic clock works by measuring the vibrations of atoms, in particular caesium 133 atoms or rubidium 87 atoms. These atoms have a characteristic transition or oscillation frequency that is extremely stable. In an atomic clock, time is measured based on the number of these oscillations or cycles.
Atomic clock time is used as the standard time reference and is the basis for Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), the globally recognized time reference. Atomic clock time is so accurate that it deviates only minimally from the actual time and takes into account even tiny fluctuations in the Earth’s rotation.
Atomic clocks are used in many areas where maximum accuracy and stability are required, such as scientific research facilities, space travel, telecommunications, navigation systems and many other applications where precise timekeeping is essential.
There is no online atomic clock!
For the reasons described above, all atomic clocks in the world are NOT connected to the Internet. And if the atomic clocks were connected to the Internet, there would always be a time difference between the clock and the data transmission via the many servers until this time was displayed on a computer. An online clock therefore always has the current time or a time with a time difference from the respective browser of the computer!
